Greater Noida: Imagine working hard your whole life to save for the retirement home of your dreams, only to find that it's really a nightmare.
A state-of-the-art housing complex was what Suraiya Durrany and her 70-year-old husband KS Durrany were expecting when they moved to the Senior Citizen Home Complex in Greater Noida, a year ago.
Instead they are now living on the 5th floor of a six-storey building, with no lift, and an erratic power and water supply.
Durrany says, “When you buy your own house, you come with a thousand dreams but now after moving here we are worse off, than the worst tenants.”
Residents say the builder, Surendra Uppal took off in April and they haven't been able to contact him since.
His office is locked and residents have to finish the work themselves. The complex doesn't have permanent electric meters.
The power backup and the promised medical clinic never materialised either. The list of deception is as long as the work that still needs to be completed.
Apartment Owners Association president C M Mundepi says, “Steps are not there, lifts are not there, some of the flats are not even complete, they are not livable water connection is not there. All of us feel disillusioned.”
The residents of this complex came expecting some peace, some quiet and a comfortable life.
Instead they have found nothing but broken promises, an uncertain future and a difficult road ahead of them.
The residents' hopes now rest on the Greater Noida Development Authority. Officials at the Development Authority's Office say they will have to make a policy decision about the case. But they refused to comment on camera.
