Noida rape: Police blunder may hit Mayawati's polls prospects

Noida: The Noida Police's goof ups continue. In the aftermath of the Aarushi Talwar murder case in 2008, ADG UP Police, Gurudarshan Singh had gone on to question the character of the victim and her father, Dr Rajesh Talwar, during a press conference.

"Aarushi and Hemraj were close to each other. Rajesh Talwar did not like this though his own character wasn't great either," he had said.

Four years later, the Noida Police has bungled up yet again, this time in a gangrape case. The police clearly seemed to be blaming the victim for the rape as they said that she willingly went with the 5 men, accused and arrested in connection with the crime, as she wanted to drink.

"The girl wanted to drink. Therefore, she accompanied the five boys to their party," said Anant Dev, Superintendent of Police.

As if this was not enough, the police also released a press note clearly giving out the name and family details of the victim.

However, realising the damage his comments had done, the SP later on retracted his statements saying, "I never gave out details about the victim, must be a subordinate officer."

Even if the SP didn't prepare the press note himself, shouldn't he have at least checked it before it was given out to the media? More importantly, can he think of avoiding responsibility when he himself spoke about the girl wanting to drink alcohol? Does not that tarnish the reputation of the victim and also that of her family?

Meanwhile, the victim's mother is a distraught heap. "Why did they give out her address? Who will marry her now? Everyone will know about the case," she sobbed.

The goof-up happened despite the Indian law laying it down very clearly in Section 228 A of the IPC that disclosure or publishing the identity of a rape victim can attract a punishment upto two years in jail.

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has sought an explanation. An embarassed UP police has ordered an inquiry. In election season, this can even embarrass Chief Minister Mayawati herself.
