New Delhi: Lakshman alias Lacchi is in police remand for his alleged involvement in the Sheeba Thomas murder case. The Noida Police, under immense pressure from all corners, acted swiftly and suspended two officers for negligence.

Sheeba Thomas was shot at by Lakshman when she was returning home to Noida on Tuesday night. He and three other men with him stopped Sheeba's car in an attempt to rob her of her cash and other belongings.

Noida, a part of the National Capital Region, that has witnessed an unprecedented real estate boom, is fast emerging as the crime capital in the region.

Though the country has realised the seriousness of the situation only now, the truth is that Noida's crime graph has always shown an upward trend.

November 2006: Adobe CEO's son, Anant Kumar was kidnapped while waiting for his school bus. The case was solved in five days, but the main accused — Chatterapal — managed to escape from a Noida court in full public glare on February 4, 2008. He was arrested two months later.

January 2007: Nithari Serial Killings unearthed. More than 30 children went missing since 2004, but the police failed to notice. Till December 2007, it was a case that shocked the nation.

February 2008: Ravinder Bhati, son of UP minister shot three people in broad daylight. Bhati was arrested on February 29.

March 2008: Rakesh Kumar Anand, an employee of Steel Authority of India was shot dead outside his home by two men on motorcycle. No headway in the case so far.

April 2008: The month made the Noida Police sit up — first on April 7, a 17-year-old was raped in a moving car and within 24 hours of this incident, Sheeba Thomas was murdered and an ex-Armyman shot near Amity.

These are just a few horrific incidents. Police records reveal 300 cases of looting and car thefts in the last seven months.
