Thiruvananthapuram: After the deadline closed on Thursday evening for withdrawal of candidature for the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala, a total of 217 candidates remained in the fray for 20 seats in the state, the state election commission's office said.

The Kottayam seat has the maximum number of 20 candidates and Malappuram has the least – only four.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, the total number of candidates in the fray from Kerala was 177.

The ruling Left Democratic Front, the Congress-led United Democratic Front, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have put up candidates in all the 20 seats.

The Nationalist Congress Party is contesting in four constituencies. Kerala goes to the polls April 16.
