Non-violence camp at Gandhi ashram

New Delhi: January 30 is Mahatma Gandhi's 59th death anniversary and the Sabarmati Ashram is inaugurating a special youth camp on non-violence to commemorate this.

On this occasion the Secretary of the Sabarmati Ashram Memorial and Preservation Trust, Amrut Modi told CNN-IBN, "Youth from all south Asian countries have come and they will stay here upto February 4. They will be discussing how the south Asian countries can come near and try to work towards non-violence and peace and tolerance."

The entire nation paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on this day, with President A P J Abdul Kalam leading the country in remembering the Father of the Nation by offering floral tributes at his samadhi, Rajghat.

Kalam and other top leaders, including Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Cabinet colleagues and Leader of Opposition L K Advani offered flowers at Gandhi's samadhi.

The three Chiefs of the Armed Forces were also present on the occasion to pay homage to Gandhi on what is observed as 'Martyr's Day'.

The gathering, that included noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande, observed two minutes' silence in memory of Gandhi.

Hymns, including Gandhiji's favourite devotional song Vaishnav Jan To, were played on the occasion.
