Chandigarh: Former Haryana director general of police SPS Rathore got a breather in terms of the barely six month long punishment in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.

Rathore was bailed out on the very first day after his sentencing but now the noose is again tightening with citizens, politicians and lawyers asking for the Ruchika molestation case to be reopened and for former Haryana DGP to be held answerable for the young girl's harassment and suicide.

Rathore has also been showcaused by the Union Home Ministry as to why his President's Police Medal awarded in 1985 should not be withdrawn.

Not only does Rathore, convicted of molesting 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra, stands to lose his President's Police Medal within the next two months but the Centre is moving fast to reduce his pension.

"The Ministry of Home Affairs is taking steps to withdraw the police medal given to former DGP SPS Rathore. In so far as the other issue of reduction in pension fund due to unbecoming of a police officer, steps are being initiated to issue a showcause notice to the officer," Union Home Secretary GK Pillai said in New Delhi on Saturday.

In Chandigarh, angry residents have been out on the streets shouting slogans against Rathore, demanding that the case be reopened, reinvestigated and Rathore be held responsible for the suicide of Ruchika who killed herself on December 29, 1993.

The pressure from the civil society is showing results. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has been forced to act and the state police website has already deleted the entire profile of former DGP Rathore.

"The whole case needs to be revisited. We will open the case within the legal ambit. I have instructed Director General of Police and protection will be given to Ruchika's parents," said Hooda.

The six-month sentence and bail on the very first day might just be temporary respite for the molester top cop Rathore.

Calls for reopening the case and addition of abetment to suicide charge could land Rathore in much deeper trouble.
