Mumbai: With his face covered in a black cloth, Abdul Qayoom Abdul Karim Shaikh, a close aide of underworld gangster Dawood Ibrahim and wanted for several extortion cases in Mumbai since 1983, was held and interrogated by the Mumbai Crime branch on Tuesday.

Qayoom’s arrest could spell doom for actor Sanjay Dutt as he is accused of having sold a 9 mm pistol to actor Sanjay Dutt for Rs 40,000. And this is a fact mentioned by gangster Abu Salem in his confession last year.

Now, the CBI is using this information to establish Dutt's links with the Dawood gang.

“He (Qayoom) has been arrested in a case from Juhu under the MCOCA. We believe that he is also wanted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. That case is with the CBI and I cannot comment on it,” DCP, Mumbai Crime Branch, Dhananjay Kamlakar says.

The arrest comes at a time when the sentence in the Sanjay Dutt case is still to be given out and any new details revealed by Qayoom could adversely affect the actor's case.

Qayoom, who was arrested near the suburb of Sion, had been based out of Dubai since 1991. Qayoom fled Mumbai after the 1993 Mumbai blasts and in Dubai he became a sidekick to Dawood 's brother, Anees. Before leaving for Dubai, Shaikh was a real estate broker and also had a tailoring shop at Mahim, Mumbai.

With his arrest, the Mumbai Police also hopes to get a further insight into D-company's operations.

“We will question him in relation to his links with Dawood and other gangsters, whom we believe he was once close to,” Kamlakar reveals.

The arrest follows a string of deportations of Dawood's men from Dubai and points to a shake up in the gang's structure and its operations in the city.
