New Delhi: Dr Jeewan Kumar, brother of alleged kidney transplant racket mastermind Dr Amit Kumar, was arrested in Delhi on Sunday afternoon.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Jeewan, an alleged key aide to Amit, from near its headquarters on Lodhi Road at around 1400 hrs IST.
Jeewan was absconding since January 24 when the racket was busted in Gurgaon. The Interpol had issued a Red Corner notice against him and Amit, who was arrested on February 7 from a forest retreat in Nepal.
The brothers are accused of conducting about 500 illegal kidney transplants. They allegedly served an international clientele and duped impoverished labourers in India of their kidneys for paltry sums of money. The brothers carried out transplants despite not being qualified surgeons
Their racket was spread across India and they allegedly served clients from Britain, US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates
The CBI is currently interrogating Jeewan regarding his involvement in the kidney racket.
Jeewan allegedly helped Amit escape from the country and with his arrest the authorities claim to have detained all the four key accused in the multi-crore racket: the brothers, Dr Upendra Aggarwal and Dr Saraj Kovid.
Saraj surrendered before a Gurgaon court on February 8 and Aggarwal was arrested on January 24 itself.
Jeewan’s wife Pooja Singhal is in judicial custody for allegedly helping him to escape the police.
The CBI is also interrogating Linda, a nurse and an associate of Amit Kumar. Linda has been in detention since her arrest January 31. Linda worked at the state-run Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in Delhi.
A resident of Manipur, Linda worked for Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameshwar Raut for over a year before taking up a job in the government hospital here in 2006.
She continued to work part time for Amit, who operated the global organ transplant racket. It was said Linda was paid Rs.25,000-Rs.30,000 a month while working with Amit.
