New Delhi: The mercury today plummeted to the lowest in the capital this winter measuring 2.6 degree Celsius as Delhiites pulled out more woolen to fight the biting cold.

On Monday Delhi recorded a minimum of 2.6 degree Celsius—four notches below normal while the temperature in the night is expected to hover around two degree Celsius, the Met Department said.

The minimum temperature will be around two degrees for the next two more days, the Weatherman said attributing the trend to the north-westerly winds and cold winds blowing from Punjab.

Delhi was experiencing chilly winter for the past two days with minimum temperature at around four degreed. Air traffic at international and domestic airport was normal as there was no fog.

"It was a normal day at the airport. Visibility was above 2,000 meters and all flights took off at their scheduled time," said airport sources.

In Uttar Pradesh, fog stalled road and rail traffic. Agra was the coldest place in the state at 6.4 degrees, followed by Allahabad at 7.2 degrees. People in most parts in Punjab and Haryana too reeled under the extreme cold. The minimum temperature touched zero degrees in Chandigarh, breaking a 35-year old record.

The weatherman says there is hope that temperatures would slightly increase from Tuesday.

One death was reported from Uttar Pradesh taking the toll in the state this winter to 41, while a man found unconscious beside a road in Jammu died later in hospital.

Water pipes froze and burst at many places in Pilani, Churu and Barmer due to the low temperatures. The cold wave continued unabated in Himachal Pradesh with temperatures remaining below freezing at many places, especially in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts.

People in most parts in Punjab and Haryana too reeled under the extreme cold but there was hope as the met office said temperatures would increase slightly from Tuesday.
