Seoul: North Korea appears to be preparing to conduct new missile tests, a South Korean news agency reported on Tuesday.

After five rocket tests on Monday on North Korea's east coast, there were signs that further short-range rockets could be fired from the country's west coast, the Yonhap agency reported, citing an unnamed official in Seoul.

The South Korean military did not confirm the information.

The series of rocket tests was probably part of military exercises aimed at improving the country's rocket technology, according to reports.

North Korea has barred shipping from part of the sea near its east and west coasts until October 20.

The rockets launched on Monday were thought to be surface-to-surface missiles with a range of up to 120 km, Yonhap said.

Communist North Korea's military carried out a series of ballistic missile tests in early July, further escalating tensions over its nuclear and missile programmes.

On that occasion, seven rockets with a range of 400 to 500 km were tested, the South Korean media reported.

North Korea recently announced its readiness to restart talks about its nuclear programmes.
