Guwahati: A day after another blast in Imphal the demand for a common security force for the Northeastern states has gathered strength as it's the best measure to tackle insurgency.
Tn May 2008 the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Garlosa) militant faction was responsible for killing 22 migrant workers. And to deal with them more effectively, the seven states of Northeast India have proposed a common security force.
"This is a question which the Administrative Reforms Commission is examining and we are going to deal with various state governments," said Chairman, Administrative Reforms Commission, Veerappa Moily.
The porous borders of the Northeast are often used by militant groups like the Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami to enter India. And with the blasts in Tripura in October this demand could not be better timed.
A single force in the Northeast would do away with the 20 kms buffer rule that militants take advantage of now. According to the rule forces from one state cannot move more than 20 km into another state this hinders counter-insurgency operations.
"The question is who controls this common force. The chain of command and utlisation pattern will decide that. It's a good thing, a block of force dedicated for Northeast," said former DG, Tripura GM Srivasatava.
So as long as security is ensured, along with better intelligence sharing and improved coordination between the two states a common force might just be the answer to tackle militancy in the Northeast better.
