New Delhi: In Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's latest face off with the judiciary, a contempt notice was served to him for making a comment on Sohrabuddin’s death in a fake encounter.
The contempt notice was served on the basis of a complaint by Sohrabudin's brother, Rubabudin, who had interpreted this as an open admission by Modi to his brother's fake encounter.
The court has exempted Modi from personal appearance before it but he will still have to explain why he should not be pulled out for speaking on Sohrabuddin out of turn.
“We are very happy with notice that has been sent to Modi. We hope he be made a co-accused in the case also,” said Rubabuddin Sheikh.
Already, Modi has been questioned by the Election Commission for making the controversial comment. In his response to the EC, he denied having admitted to Sohrabuddin's encounter.
He had claimed then that it was just a response to Sonia Gandhi. Now in the Supreme Court, the response is likely to be similar.
“We have the highest regard for the court and will give them a reply,” said Prakash Jhavadekar, BJP spokesperson.
Modi, meanwhile, is continuing his attack against the Congress. In a campaign speech on Wednesday, he chose to reply to Sonia Gandhi rather than the Supreme Court. "Sonia ben, Narendra Modi is not the Merchant of Death. Your Congress Government is the Merchant of Death," he said.
But in the political battlefield, Modi wants to convert this into a political opportunity. He is on the lookout for emotive issues, something which can be used to bring the badly fractured castes.
In 2002, it was Hindutva, in 2007, it’s his war on terror. Here, Sohrabuddin's killing was a logical outcome.
