New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner BK Gupta courted controversy on Sunday for making a statement on the safety of women in the nation's capital saying that women should be accompanied by a relative or friend when travelling alone at night.
Speaking on the rise of crimes against women in Delhi, he said that it was wrong to always blame the police for negligence. At the same time, he advised women not to venture out alone in the night.
"You have to take some basic precaution. You can't travel at 2 in night and say that Delhi is not safe. So reasonable precautions are expected to be taken by all citizens of Delhi," said Gupta.
Gupta was addressing an audience at Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Ladies organisation.
