Stress calling! Cellphones ring in killer news for Army

Jammu: Often, for a jawan posted on the border - living away from loved ones for months at a stretch - a letter or a phone call is a welcome relief.

But not always says, a study by the CRPF. Especially if the news is bad and if it is conveyed on cellphones that delivers news fast.

Senior army officers would want us to believe the recent rise in incidents of suicide in the army has something to do with cellphones.

“The letters would always reach late and by the time the soldier would go through it he would be able to absorb much of the shock but the mobile connectivity gives prompt news …it adds to tension,” says GoC, Northern Command, Lt Gen H S Panag.

It was thought that to stay connected with their families 24/7 would help the soldiers reduce the tension. But surprisingly, the small gadget is a big contributing factor to suicides among the troopers.

The CRPF study on stress-related deaths says many of the suicides are because of separation from family, personal and family problems and hostile working environment.

“We have already seen reports of suicides in them almost every day. That speaks about the precarious psychological state they are undergoing. And if there is bad news which are reported on day to day basis, it might actually lead to such kinds of impulsive behaviours,” says psychiatrist with Srinagar’s Government Medical College, Arshad Hussain,

More than a 100 armymen committed suicide last year. The Army, in its efforts to make the work environment better, is now asking jawans to try out yoga classes and games to fight off burn-out.
