London: It is Diwali week in London though the official festival of lights may be a week away.
Trafalgar Square was brimming with people from all walks of life participating in the festivities ahead of the actual festival.
Thousands assembled in the historic square in the British capital. For many, it was an ideal opportunity to forget all the 'credit crisis’ worries for a day and just have some fun.
Some came to join in, others came out of curiosity to the event that has become a regular annual event for the Indian community in UK.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said, "These days when the shares have been falling like the leaves from the trees, we all need light in our lives, ladies and gentlemen. We need Diwali to remind us about the importance of family, and of giving and of charity and of course of the amazing contribution made by the people of the Indian communities to this city of ours."
The London social fabric treats it as an integral part of the city’s social calendar. So, whether one was Hindu or from any other religion, Indian or from any other ethnicity, Diwali at Trafalgar Square welcomed all.
“Lovely atmosphere and people very friendly here,” said a non-Indian participant. There was music, dance and gaiety that marked the occasion for all to remember.
