New Delhi: American Jazz legend Herbie Hancock is in India for a concert to mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s visit to India in 1959.

While the concert will take place on Monday, February 16 in Delhi, Hancock made a stop over at the Pandit Ravi Shankar Institute over the weekend for a valuable and educative musical exchange with the celebrated Indian sitar legend, Pandit Ravi Shankar.

It’s a personal demonstration of the kind that classical enthusiasts would wait a lifetime for.

But Jazz’s great Herbie Hancock was lucky to have found appreciation in the sitar maestro.

Pandit Ravi Shankar took it upon himself to show Herbie the similarities between classical Hindustani music and jazz.

Herbie and his team followed as he lead with taals and raaga's that brought out the foundation that Hindustani classical rests upon.

Pandit Ravi Shankar said, “"I have been a tremendous fan of Jazz from my childhood. I have heard all the great ones like Satchmo, Duke Ellington and these are the older ones. Then of course I have heard Mile Davis, John Coltrane and then the newer groups."

While it was evident that Herbie was impressed, it was more the concept of improvisation that he felt kept the spirit of both sounds going.

"The details are not always the same but the over view is similar in that improvising is something that we are decided on. Whether it is chord structures or the scale, or something that has some particular rules to it," said Herbie Hancock.

Whether or not the jugal bandi between the two legends moves out of the recordings of the meeting in the institute’s hall and collaborates into an album, is not yet known.

But history records now that the two musical legends did come together to show that the spirit to constantly improvise can be an inspiration for the generations to follow.
