Controversy at Virginia University

Charlottesville: The student paper — Cavalier Daily at the University of Virginia published cartoons depicting God in a sexual situation with Virgin Mary, and Jesus on the cross telling jokes.

The cartoon printed in the Cavalier Daily was supposed to be funny, but a group of u-v-a students and a national catholic group aren't laughing.

A student at University of Virginia Alex Cortes says, “Jesus on the cross during the crucifixion basically cracking jokes at an open mike, saying was there a sale at the store.”

Student-produced comic provoked other u-v-a students to react in writing at first. But on Friday, another drawing — this one depicting God and Virgin Mary in a sexual situation graced the paper's pages.

Those upset students say that one was arguably more offensive — making a mockery of Christianity.

“They present such a cartoon with Muhammad on a cross or Allah having sex with Mary? I doubt they would,” added Cortes.

Cortes and others asked for an apology from the paper and assurance that the Cavalier Daily would revisit it's censorship policy and now they're getting what they wanted.

Cavalier Daily Editor-in-Chief , Elizabeth Mills says, “We’ve apologized to our readership for any offence that may have been taken of the cartoons that we've published last Thursday and Friday.”

Cavalier Daily removed the comic from its website and the Editor-in-Chief says she's happy Cortes came to the paper with his concerns. As a student-run teaching paper, Mills says her editors can only learn from their mistakes.

“When our readership is concerned about something, we sit down and say, why did we do what we did and if anyone's offended, we take that into consideration,” added Mills.
