Now fatwa on contraceptives in MP

Bhopal: A Bhopal Mufti has issued a fatwa calling for a ban on the use of any kind of contraceptives. This comes even as the state government plans to distribute 20,000 copies of a book by Padma awardee Muzaffar Hussain that identifies family planning as a means for development of the community.

The book by Muzaffar Hussain has enraged the Muslim clergy in Madhya Pradesh. The book reasons that population explosion among Muslims is not good for the community and that the Koran supports family planning.

The BJP government has already distributed 10,000 copies of this book among community members and plans to distribute another 10,000 copies. The fatwa, on the other hand, calls contraception anti-Shariat.

Bhopal Mufti Raees Ahmed Khan Qasmi said, " I have said that any sort of contraceptive is against Islam and they should be used only if the doctors advise so in cases where the woman is not in a position to give birth to the child.”

The fatwa, however, has not gone down well with the Muslim intelligentsia and women's groups.

All India Women Muslim Personal Law Board President Nusrat Bano Ruhi said, “I don't agree with this fatwa because a contraceptive is not a poison that is used to kill the child. It is precaution and precautions are allowed in Islam."

This is not the first time that a fatwa has been issued in Bhopal. Recently, fatwas have been issued against toothpaste, Jams, chocolates and junk food. Not surprisingly, fatwas are becoming a subject of ridicule, even among Muslims.
