New Delhi: One of the biggest problems facing India’s power supply system today is theft.

Even as most discoms continue to lose almost 10 per cent of their power to thefts, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vidyut Nigam's (DHBVN) internet-based whistleblower scheme comes as a step forward.

Fed up with mounting losses, the DHBVN has now decided to rope in consumers to control the power theft.

"Considering we receive about one crore units per day, about 10 lakh units are lost by the management in theft. That is why we launched the scheme,” says superintending engineer, DHBVNL, Mukat Vashistha.

Features included in the Informer scheme:

  • The informer can call the toll free number 16001801011 or email at hookacrook4dhbvn@yahoo.co.in or hookacrook4dhbvn@gmail.com giving details of people stealing power.
  • If the theft is confirmed, a minimum amount of Rs 1,000 per case is given to the informer.
  • And when the DHBVN recovers the assessed theft amount, 10 per cent of the amount realised, subject to maximum of Rs 50,000 per case, is given to the informer.

And this is all done with the complainant's identity is kept secret.

So far, the board has detected power theft worth 2 crore rupees under the scheme, which is more than half of which has already been recovered.

The officials say the scheme has made their task easy.

“The complaints are checked by our vigilance team. It is working well with the customer's support,” says DGM (Works), DHBVN, V K Aggarwal.

So wooing customers with incentives for reporting thefts seems to be the 'in' thing’.

While DHBVN offers cash rewards, power discom, BSES that supplies power in many parts of Delhi, has launched a scheme to hand out free CFL bulbs to those who report theft.
