Ahmedabad: Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday based on the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai was released in theatres across India on Friday including Gujarat which had effectively banned the screening of Rahul Dholakia’s Parzania.
Just like Black Friday, Parzania deals with an equally sensitive issue- the Gujarat riots. There was however, no protest against Black Friday’s release from any quarters in Gujarat.
And those who came in to see Black Friday felt they should not be deprived from the right to watch Parzania either.
"The movie was extremely good. It showed the real situation. It is indeed sad that Parzania is not being allowed to be screened in Gujarat,” said a resident, Purav Trivedi.
While another resident Arjun Singh Rathode added, "I liked the movie Black Friday. Yes, Parzania is also based on what happened in Gujarat. They are not allowing it to be screened. That is sad.”
Black Friday looks at the Mumbai Blasts as a result of the riots which followed the Babri Masjid demolition in the city.
The screening of Parzania received objections from certain parties since it had Gujarat as a backdrop and had an anti-right wing stance - something that Black Friday steers clear of.
"Yes, it is connected to the blast, but not to communal riots. Also, there has not been any opposition from anyone, so we decided to screen the movie,” says general manager, Wide Angle Multiplex, Niraj Ahuja.
So with Parzania not being released in Gujarat, and Black Friday did, suggests that it is not for the cinema proprietors in Gujarat to decide whether or not to screen a film.
