Smooth roads to milk and marble

Through this week CNN-IBN is bringing you a special series on India's brand new highways. Our reporters travelled from Delhi to Mumbai on the Golden Quadrilateral to get you stories of change.

Ahmedabad: What do better roads mean to established industries like Gujarat's dairies or Rajasthan's marble industry?

One need not be Shah Jehan to admire expensive marble slabs. Kishengarh is from where that glazed look travels to dream homes across the countries.

Kishengarh's marble industry has been bogged down by 'killer roads' all this while.

“Now the marble doesn't break when we transport it. Earlier, we used to incur 15 per cent loss,” said Director of Sales, R K Marble, Sanjay Bakliwal.

The regal splendour of this white is not a gift of the new roads to Rajasthan alone.

When you travel in Gujarat, you will see that dairy industries and in turn dairy farmers are making more money now.

That’s because the milk can reach the pasteurisation plants in time before it gets spoilt, so there's less wastage. What it also means, is a fresh glass of milk at your breakfast table.

In the case of Uttam dairy in Ahmedabad, which sources milk from far-flung districts, milk turns sour within three hours of collection. The dairy has to run several chilling plants to treat the milk before bringing it to the main plant.

With the roads lending wings to these trucks, the milk reaches Ahmedabad directly.

“Due to efficient transportation we are able to pay Rs 3.60 per litre more to the to the producers now,” said Chairman of Uttam Dairy, Mohanbhai R Bharwad.

The roads have changed everything, even the approach to business. Earlier, you looked at price management with the heart of marble, now, it's the milk of human kindness.
