Kolkata: It has been a long fight for Dr Kunal Saha, who lost his wife Dr Anuradha Saha 15 years ago due to medical negligence by a Kolkata hospital. Dr Kunal Saha and wife Anuradha had come to India from America for a holiday back in 1998.
36-year-old Anuradha developed an allergy which took her to the AMRI hospital in Kolkata. Instead of improving, Anuradha took a turn for the worse after a steroid called Depomedral was given to her. Dr Anuradha Saha was moved to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, but it was too late and she never made it.
"When a patient goes to the hospital, he gives himself in the hands of the doctor. Every day we see cases of medical negligence but no doctor is caught," said Dr Kunal Saha.
Even after his case for medical negligence was dismissed by the West Bengal Medical Council and his appeal was dismissed in the Calcutta High Court, Dr Kunal Saha did not give up. He appealed against the decision in the Supreme court.
Saha also formed an NGO, People for Better Treatment, to raise the issue of medical negligence in the country. He pledged to donate every bit of the compensation he gets for this cause and to help further his wife's passion, a child psychologist, to help poor children in India.
