NSA clears the air on China's role at NSG

CNN-IBN

The National Security Advisor M K Narayanan spoke with CNN-IBN on various issues concerning the waiver in Vienna and China's opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal. Following are the excerpts from the interview:

On Letter Leaked To Washington Post

The assessment was that this is part of the conflict going on in the US government and the leakage was a deliberate ploy.

On Fuel Supply Assurances

All our understanding was predicated on fuel supply assurances and the letter tries to make light of it, so I think we will take it up with the US government.

What If India Tests?

Whatever exceptional circumstances there will be a timeline of one year before cessation of cooperation takes place more important the reason why the exceptional circumstances has arisen is it due to security. They will be factored.

On NSG Sceptics

Of the skeptics, I think the Prime Minister spoke to each one of them. I think it softened them. I don't say they came on board.

China's Role At NSG

The Chinese leadership made the point they would not be the problem. They may not be enthusiastic, would be quite comfortable if it did not go through. But the idea was they would not create a problem and that was the position they had over the last 48 hours. When they started backing some of the sceptics. A matter of strategy or conviction, I don't know.

Dealing With China

I think the Indian Government will do what every, trust but verify. The point is you never take anything at face value. There are differences. It's not that we don't know China is closely allied with Pakistan.
