Nude beach in California runs into trouble

Kristen Cusato, CNN

California: Just 50 miles north of San Diego, San Onofre state beach is beautiful, calm and quiet, and for the last 20 years, a small section of the secluded beach has been clothing optional.

Regular visitors say, “It's great here and we highly recommend it.” But those who choose to go nude, can only do so at the beach for a few more months.

Come Labor Day, state ark rangers, who used to look the other way, will have all eyes on the nudists and they will ticket them if they refuse to cover up.

But why enforce the no-nudity policy now? The acting superintendent for San Onofre state beach, Rick Haydon, says he is worried about sexual harassment lawsuits.

“Our hands are tied. Employees are complaining and our department is liable. We have to do something,” Haydon was quoted as saying.

However, many are still hoping that things will calm down and the people who think they are in charge back away, and let things be as it's been peacefully for the last 20 years.

In fact, many like Bellamy Walker, who are new to the concept of nude beaches, say, “I have always been so closed-minded and to come out here and be nude is very liberating.”

Meanwhile, well-wishers of San Onofre say they patrol this particular stretch of the beach. If they see someone doing something lewd or inappropriate, they kick them out, or call the rangers on them.

But according to those same rangers some beachgoers, and campers are not impressed with those who dare to go bare.
