New Delhi: In the Capital, nursery schools have put forward an alternative proposal for admissions, right before a deadline given by the Delhi High Court comes up on Monday.

The new proposal will reserve 20 per cent seats for management quota. It will also give equal weightage to the parents' educational background and the distance from home to school.

The Delhi High Court had asked nursery schools to come up with an alternative to the admission process to reduce pressure on children.

But schools may not submit the final proposal on Monday when the case comes up for hearing.

Modern School principal Latha Vaidyanathan says, “Modern school is going on its own and the NPSC through its action committee members which includes schools from NPSC as well as the action committee, which includes a whole lot of schools from Delhi."

The Delhi High Court had said in December 2005 that a new policy should be drawn up, which didn't involve holding interviews with the children and parents.

The proposal mooted by the National Progressive Schools' Council suggests that some weightage be given to distance between the school and the child's home, while Modern School's proposal continues to seek reservation of seats for children of alumni and staff members and interaction with the parents.

Vaidyanathan adds, “How do we deny parent to know what is happening. If they want to know what kind of school we are then need to get into conversation with us – call it a chat, call it a conversation call it informal.”

The High Court is bound to see more than one alternative proposal on Monday. But with schools standing united in their demand for interaction with parents before admissions, the choice could just be a false one.
