NY governor linked to prostitution racket

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer has apologised after he was linked to a prostitution ring involving high-end customers.

He made his statement following a New York Times article that said he had informed his staff he had been involved in a prostitution ring.

The New York Times reported that the Democratic governor was caught in a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month.

The Times says the governor learnt he had been implicated in the probe when a federal official contacted his staff on Friday.

The report linked the governor to a racket that supplied prostitutes to wealthy men in New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris.

Spitzer did not deny or address the report, but said he was "disappointed" he failed to live up to his own standards.

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and that violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong,” Spitzer said.

Spitzer says he violated his duties to his family and said he would spend more time with them to make up.

With his wife at his side, he also said he needed to take some time to regain the trust of his family.

As Attorney General, Spitzer prosecuted several prostitution rings and has spoken out against such crimes.

The Democrat, described by Time magazine as 'Crusader of the Year’ in 2006 for his anti-corruption drive, has resisted calls to resign.
