Capitol Hill (Washington): In one of the most hard-hitting political speeches given in the American capital, one of the most popular Democratic Presidential candidates, Senator Barack Obama, called Pakistan a breeding ground for al-Qaeda and said if President Musharraf won't go after the terrorists then America should.
"If we had actionable intelligence that Osama Bin Laden or other high value targets were in Pakistan, i would ensure that they were targeted and killed or captured," said Democratic Presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama.
Not far from where the Senator delivered his speech, another group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill vented their frustration at what they described as lack of results despite pumping in billions of dollars in military aid in Pakistan.
"For the last five years, I have been warning that despite our assistance, Pakistan was not making a complete effort to combat terrorism, that President Musharraf had a made a strategic decision to have it both ways: that he would co-operate with us on al-Qaeda but turn a blind eye when it came to Pakistan's former and apparently current friends the Taliban," said Democrat Gary Ackerman.
Some lawmakers have also threatened to cut aid to Pakistan, but that has been opposed by the Bush administration, which fears that weakening President Musharraf's rule could lead to the rise of a fundamentalist regime in the country.
The US Congress however is backing words with actions. The House of Representatives has passed a Bill tying all military assistance to Pakistan to concrete results in the war against terror.
