Obama loses poll points over pastor's remarks

CNN-IBN

Boonville (Indiana), US: In the US presidential race, Barack Obama is facing a drop in popularity over his former pastor's radical views.

A CNN "poll of polls", that averages the latest surveys says that nation-wide, Obama now leads 45 per cent over Clinton's 44 per cent, a one per cent lead that seems to be narrowing over the 11-point lead he had at the beginning of April.

Voters surveyed indicated that Obama's image has suffered of Reverend Wright's recent remarks, including his allegations that AIDS was created by US government agencies.

It's an issue Hillary Clinton is making political capital of, questioning why Obama hadn't parted company with Wright earlier.

The polls come a week ahead of the next round of democratic primaries in Indiana and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Obama’s wife Michelle has been campaigning relentlessly in Indiana on behalf of her husband.

She is reaching out to blue-collar voters, ahead of the state's primary on next Tuesday.

At a rally on Thursdaym in Boonville, Michelle Obama wanted to remind voters that her husband is the underdog in the race, even though he currently has more delegates than Senator Hillary Clinton.

Speaking exclusively to CNN, Michelle Obama said, “This is where we are today and I remind people of this because I have to be reminded of it, because Barack has always been the underdog. From the moment he opened his mouth he was the underdog and I was there with the underdog so I remember well that there was nothing inevitable.”

The Obamas are now trying to further distance themselves from their controversial former pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
