"Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another. A journey that will bring a new and better day to America," he said
"Because of you, tonight I can stand here and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for the President of the United States of America," he added.
If Obama wins the November election he'll be America's fifth youngest president.
His nomination was sealed as results of the last round of Primaries came in, though he lost South Dakota to Hillary Clinton but won Montana.
More importantly in a matter of hours he had virtually sewn up the nomination as Superdelegates lined up behind him, enabling him to cross the magic figure of 2118 delegates.
Hillary Clinton was among the first to congratulate her rival but would not go public with what she told members of the New York Congress that she's willing to be his running mate.
"I want to start tonight by congratulating Senator Obama and his supporters on the extraordinary race that they have run," he said.
"Senator Obama has inspired so many Americans to care about politics and empowered so many more to get involved and our party and our democracy is stronger and more vibrant as a result so we are grateful," she added.
Hillary's camp is known to be pressing influential members of the Democratic Party.
Many see the Obama camp taking on Hillary as crucial to healing the divisions within the party and presenting a united challenge to Republican John McCain.
Meanwhile Obama has given no indication if that is an option he's willing to consider.
