Obama's plan: Get down to business right away

Ed Henry, CNN

Washington: After the inaugural address was over and Barack Obama made his way to the White House, CNN learned that the new US President is planning to head right into the Oval Office before even sitting down in the reviewing stand to watch the rest of the parade.

Aides say he wants to get right down to business as soon as Tuesday as he plans to name at least one special envoy to deal with the mid-east crisis.

“Obama has said repeatedly that he intends to engage early and aggressively with diplomacy all over the world,” Senior White House advisor David Axelrod said.

Aides also say that on Wednesday the new President will bring in his senior economic advisers to suggest that he is on top of the financial crisis.

Another big moment on Wednesday is when the new commander-in-chief will huddle with military leaders and tell them to withdraw all US combat troops within 16 months. Obama hopes that this will be an attempt to reassure nervous liberals that he will fulfill his signature campaign promise.

Aides also say there will be other dramatic moves to show a clean break from former president George Bush's approach to the war on terror.

President Obama's press secretary said, “We've talked about banning torture and closing Guantanamo Bay, the process by which that will happen. I think those are probably the big things that could happen as early as the first week."

Obama also may flex his muscles this week with other executive orders on the homefront that could have a huge impact on millions of Americans – starting with an executive order that would reverse a Bush administration policy that banned taxpayer money from funding international family planning groups that promote abortion as an option.

Another move under consideration is raising fuel efficiency on automobiles – which would please environmentalists, but put more pressure on the struggling car industry in America.
