OBC Quota impact: IIMs face resource crunch

New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) deferred declaring the admission list for 2008-2010 by a week after the Supreme Court upheld the government's decision to reserve 27 per cent seats in higher educational institutes.

With 22.5 per cent of seats already reserved for Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes; after the SC's verdict 49.5 per cent of seats will now be filled by the reserved category.

"As of now what we are doing is that we are going to bring in these 19 students in the same class. We are not adding a new section. So everything remains intact. But beyond that it will change dramatically. We will have to have more faculties. Infrastructure will also have to change. We will also have to add a fair bit of our own programmes to strengthen the background of the students who are under prepared. We will do that," IIM-Bangalore Director Pankaj Chandra said.

But the IIMs have also assured students applying through the general category that they won't be affected.

IIMs have asked for a gradual phasing out of the crunch faced due to the 27 per cent OBC quota over a period of three years.

In the first year the IIMs will increase the number of seats by six per cent in the second year the number of seats will go up by 30 per cent.

And in the third year the number of seats will go up by 18 per cent. But the sudden increase will affect the seats in the general category this year.

Currently the IIMs have 1600 seats with each IIM accommodating between 250 - 300 seats.
