New Delhi: Anjali, a journalism student in Delhi, had been receiving unwanted calls from a particular number for several days.
Despite her repeated threats to take action, her cell-phone kept buzzing.
That’s when she decided to take the help of the Delhi's police's anti-obscene call cell.
"I was so traumatised by these calls but then I heard about this on the radio and I called them. They immediately responded and the caller was taken to task. I have not got any calls from that number since,” she says.
Within a month of its formation, the cell has been receiving over 50 calls per day and over 10 forwarded SMSes and MMSes from women in the capital.
Besides calls and SMSs, women can also file their complaints through e-mails. Operating under the Delhi Police Crime Branch, the cell has three dedicated teams to deal with complaints.
Offenders are usually tracked down through their phone records and issued a stern warning.
"Everyone's identity has been kept confidential and we would like women who are being harassed to reach out to us so we are in a position to help them,” says Delhi police commissioner YS Dhadwal.
With the service growing in popularity the police may soon assign more cops to crack down on lewd calls.
