Highway officials demand more security

Chennai: During an anti-encroachment drive in Kanyakumari, two Highways engineers were run over by an Ambassador car in an attempt to kill them. Anthony Xavier and Sundaram were following a court order and demolishing parts of a temple that had on a highway in Kanyakumari district.

While the driver of the car escaped, the prime suspect is the son of the temple priest Arjunan and some local lawyers.

"Mr Arjunan and Russell threatened me. See how you are going to die? After that within two minutes, a white ambassador car came and hit me and I enquired after recovery, who drove the car, and my colleagues and the surrounding people told that is, Mr Senthil Kumar, son of Arjunan," Anthony Xavier said.

The incident has shocked and scared the Highways engineers and now their association has told the Tamil Nadu government and they want more police protection and action against the guilty.

"So far two people have been arrested - the priest and his wife. The priest's son in law is a lawyer and he has got anticipatory bail. I hope they take severe action," A Kabeer Ahmed, Chief Engineer, demanded.

Just few months ago a tashildar, too, was run over by a truck when he tried to stop the smuggling of PDS rice in Daharmapuri district.

In the past also officials, who tried to stop sand quarrying, were killed when the trucks they tried to stop ran over them but never before has it been caught so dramatically on tape.
