Mumbai: Senior citizens in Mumbai are feeling increasingly insecure. With most of them living alone they are now becoming targets of brutal attacks.
Lajwanti Chughani, had been living in Flat no 74 on the sixth floor of Sukhmani Housing Society for the last 40 years. After her husband died 15 years ago, and with no children to look after, her only company over these years was an 18-year-old servant Aarti.
On Monday evening, some intruders robbed Chughani's belongings and then killed her. The police believe her servant had a role to play in the robbery.
"Two people entered the house and tied their hands and legs. They demanded the keys and money and her bangles also," says DCP Zone 2, Mumbai Police, RE Pawar.
He says that there is a possibility that the servants are involved in the robbery and the murder. “Whenever these cases are detected, the servants are mostly found to be involved," says Pawar.
Although Chughani's housing block had round the clock security, it remains a mystery how the intruders got such easy access. "Their duty was to check who was going in or out. So there is a some lapse on their part,” says Pawar.
A few days ago, a couple was murdered by their servant in Santacruz. The latest killings only show how vulnerable Mumbai's senior citizens are.
