Olympian dilemmas throng S Block over Tibet

New Delhi: The Dalai Lama should stop trying to sabotage the Beijing Olympics, Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a tough message to President Bush during a talk over the phone on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Olympian dilemmas throng South Block as Tibetans reach out to Aamir Khan urging him not to carry the Olympic torch through India.

“On behalf of six million Tibetans I appeal to him to help the Tibetan cause and cooperate with us. Not to carry the Olympic torch. China is a black spot,” said Tibetan Youth Congress’ Tenzing Norsang.

Aamir is yet to respond but Tibetan activists warned there was every possibility of violence when the Olympic torch entered India in April.

“We will not allow the Olympic torch rally in India, in the land of peace under any circumstances. I am not sure whether we will stay non-violent and whether there will be violence on our part,” declared Norsang.

The threats cast another shadow over India's prickly relations with China. After Tibetan protestors stormed the Chinese embassy in Delhi last week and Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao recieved a late-night summons, it seemed set to blow into a full-scale storm when Commerce Minister Kamal Nath suddenly cancelled his visit to Beijing.

But Kamal Nath maintained, "My trip has not been called off because of any diplomatic reasons, my trip has been cancelled because of problems in dates.”

The storm seems to have been quelled for the moment after that explanation. Even China's Ambassador Zhang Yang appeared to go out of his way to thank India.

“We are grateful to the Indian government for giving the required security to the Chinese Embassy,” he said.

Earlier, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan promised full security for the Olympic Torch but the latest images coming out of Lhasa can only be expected to fuel international and domestic discord over the Beijing Olympics.
