New Delhi: It was the idea of doing a biography on his life that brought together actor Om Puri and then journalist Nandita. While the biography never materialised, the couple got married in 1993.
Now, Nandita Puri is all set to release Unlikely Hero: Om Puri. The book chronicles the life and times of the actor like Om's childhood days when he struggled to make ends meet and even did odd jobs at a dhabha after his father was arrested.
Excerpt from the book: ”When the family was in Bhatinda, Om was seven, he recalls the time his father who was in-charge of the railway store, was arrested on charges of theft. For four months, the family went through a traumatic period.”
The book also speaks about Om’s teenage years.
Excerpt from the book: “He must have been around fourteen when he was 'deflowered'. One day there was a power failure and in the dark, Santi grabbed Om, who was by then totally aroused. They slept together and the fourteen-year-old felt really great having 'come of age'. Santi was Om's first lover.”
Unlikely Hero also documents the journey of Om Puri, the actor – his stints at the National School of Drama and the Film and Television Institute of India where he met the likes of Naseeruddin Shah and experimented not just as an actor.
Excerpt from the book: “The first time Om experimented with narcotics was with Naseer. Om who was a non-smoker, enjoyed his few puffs, felt relaxed, but he did not really develop a taste for it.”
The book is a candid chronicle of all aspects of Om's life and who better than his wife Nandita to reveal such personal details, including the incident that made him an outcast of sorts within his family.
Excerpt from the book: “It was perhaps this infatuation that led Om to caress the exposed navel of his other aunt, Satya Devi one summer night on the family terrace under a moonlit sky. Though, it was the younger aunt he was physically caressing, it was actually the aura of his older aunt that had overwhelmed him.”
Published by Roli Books, Unlikely Hero is expected to be launched by actors Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah in Mumbai on November 23.
