Srinagar: National Conference leader Mustafa Kamal, who is also the uncle of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Wednesday made a U-turn on his reported anti-India comments and said that he had been misquoted. Mustafa Kamal said that he was a patriot and had been being unfairly targeted after he called India Kashimr's number one enemy.
Kamal embarrassed his nephew Omar Abdullah on Tuesday by claiming that it was the government of India and not Pakistan that was the real enemy of the Kashmiris. "I made a comment in a particular context and this has been misinterpreted. I am being victimised," said Kamal.
Kamal had earlier been quoted as saying, "I have no hesitation in saying that our enemy is our country itself. Pakistan is not our enemy. The whole world is asking for the issue to be resolved." He also accused Indian security forces of having vested interests and purposely denying peace to Kashmir.
On his nephew Omar, Kamal said, "I'll support him on every stage. He has proved his metal. His detractors are making things difficult for him, doing things to embarrass him."
Slamming the statements, the BJP asked the Chief Minister to seek an apology but Omar Abdullah responded on Twitter saying one should never work with babies, animals or relatives.
Omar, reacting to Kamal's statement, tweeted, "I don't need anyone to make things difficult for me when I have relatives. They say never work with animals and children. I think it is safe to add relatives to that list."
