Onam brings extra cheer to Thrissur weavers

Thrissur: It’s festive season in Kerala. And a whopping sale of sarees and dhotis has made the handloom weavers in Kerala a happy lot.

Nadia is just 18 years old, but she's already an expert weaver and part of Kerala's famous handloom industry.

It’s this is the time of the year (around Onam) that she and the 2,000 other weaver families look forward boom in their earnings.

“It's difficult work. I have learned it with much difficulty. But now I can help my family with the earnings from it,” says Nadia.

It's estimated that nearly Rs 20 crore worth of sarees are sold on Onam day alone. Most of them are made in Koothanpally, a hamlet in Thrissur district, where 2,000 families weave for a living. Koothampally sarees are cheap, and come in an array of designs, all woven on fine handloom fabric.

“We have good sales, as it's the Onam festival season. People from all part of Kerala come here to buy dress items,” says a salesman at G K Handlooms, Ravichandran.

But it’s not just sarees, but also men's dhotis that do roaring business during Onam. They are stacked up days in advance for the festival. The dazzling whites are sought by Malayalees all over the world and are being exported as well.
