New Delhi: Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest National Stadium, which is ready to kick off Olympics 2008 on Friday, is still under clouds. The smog caused by the Chinese capital's pollution is turning out to be a major worry.
To check pollution, the authorities had ordered hundreds of cars off the roads and stop construction work around the Olympic venue. But, it's obvious the steps have not yielded the desired results.
The games organisers are now considering rescheduling endurance events to safeguard the health of the athletes. The sportsmen though don't appear concerned.
“We are trained athletes it's all about being a 100 per cent on the day. So, wherever you are going you have concerns. In Athens, there was a lot of concern over the heat and not getting overheated,” says Pole Vaulter and Steve Hooker.
Despite pollution, organisers are optimistic of a grand ceremony, for which people have been brought in even from the army.
"A component of our performers are from military, cultural and entertainment organisations, and will participate in the opening ceremonies in order to raise the artistic level of the ceremonies. So, they currently represent about one third of the total number of performers,” says Director of Opening and Closing Ceremonies Operation Centre, Wang Ning.
The colourful opening spectacle, however can lose some sheen, if the haze doesn't clear soon.
