One held for damaging Ambedkar idol

Kanpur: A man suspected of damaging Dalit leader B R Ambedkar’s statue was arrested on Thursday night.

Arun Valmiki, a resident of Sarojini Nagar, has confessed to damaging the Ambedkar statue on Tuesday, said police. Valmiki has allegedly said he and two of his friends were drunk when they damaged the statue and they had no political motive.

The desecration of the statue has led to widespread violence in Maharashtra. Police are searching for Valmiki’s two friends, said Superintendent of Police P C Meena.

Seven persons detained in connection with the violence have been released.
