Mumbai: He is the man of the moment with his film Rang De Basanti being selected as India's official entry to the Oscars this year. CNN-IBN caught up with a happy but nervous Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.
Paras Tomar: India’s official entry to the Oscars has been announced and of course, it’s Rang De Basanti. With us, is the man behind the film, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Congratulations Rakeysh, are you excited about it?
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: Yes and I am very nervous too.
Paras Tomar: Your film is really the ‘big film’ that happened this year. Did you think that it would to be selected for the Oscars when you were rolling out the film?
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: Not really but deep down in his/her heart every film wishes for that. However, Rang De Basanti is a film that is bigger than the Oscars.
Paras Tomar: There were other contenders including Omkara and Lage Raho Munnabhai, which are very diverse films. What do you think about the contenders?
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: I feel very happy that within a span of one year so many good films were made including Omkara and Lage Raho Munnabhai, which are wonderful films. To get an edge over them or being chosen or even being able to represent your country in an International award, doesn’t mean that your film is better than those films. It just means that you are a little luckier.
Paras Tomar: Yes, of course it is the first step. Now is when the difficult process begins. What are the kinds of things that you are going to do, to make sure that the jury first see your film and make the cut finally?
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: I have the credibility and I have my producer, Ronnie Screwwalla in UTV. And above all, there is Aamir Khan, who has already been there. He has done it all and seen it all. Even if Lagaan could not make it in the Oscars, Aamir is an asset and a wonderful human being that we have in our team. The fruits of that are going to reveal itself in the days to come.
Paras Tomar: The film will make us absolutely proud in the days to come. Best of luck, Rakeysh.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: Thank you very much.
