Infant thrown into Harayana canal found alive

Kurukshetra: A one-day-old girl, who was thrown into a canal, was miraculously found alive.

The girl was found early Monday morning and police say she was wrapped and thrown into the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal on Sunday evening. They say the bundle did not fall into the swift flowing water of the canal.

Several hours later, passersby heard the infant crying and informed the police who admitted her to her a hospital.

The girl is being fed by a lactating mother who offered to help. Doctors say the little girl is recovering.

“The baby was brought to the LNJP hospital at about 10.30 am op by the police. We have examined the baby. She is okay now. She is taking feed and is okay,” CMO, Civil Hospital, Kurukshetra, Dr Parveen Garg said.

Police have registered a case of female infanticide against unknown persons.

Haryana has one of the lowest sex ratios in the country. Despite efforts by the government to end the practice, female infanticide and foeticide are rampant in the state.

The baby left parentless a day after her birth is now being tended to by nurses who say people willing to adopt the baby have already come forward but procedures will be followed before handing over the girl.
