Srinagar: In the last two weeks Kashmir saw thousands of tourists pouring into the valley. But just when they thought things were going back to normal, protest over the alleged rape of two women by security forces hit the tourism of the state.

“Kashmir is beautiful and we really enjoyed it. However, due to the strike we could not enjoy that much. The children wanted to go to the market but have not been able to as shops are closed,” says a tourist Ajay Narula.

The shutdowns, protests and curfew imposed on certain parts of the state have played spoilsport for visitors. Hoteliers say many tourists have already checked out while many others have cancelled their bookings. The famous boulevard wears a deserted look.

“Day before 3800 tourists came to Kashmir and 2600 came yesterday. Who will have to pay for it? Those poor taxi driver, shikarawala will have to bear the brunt. I fear there will less number of tourists,” says Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The tour and travel business was looking up this season with close to two lakh tourist arrivals registered already but the ongoing protest in the Valley seem to be affecting tourism now.
