New Delhi: It happened almost 10 years ago, but even now the BJP feels it was onion prices that forced them out of power in the national Capital. And as the prices rise once again, the party sees an opportunity.
Says BJP President Rajnath Singh, "We have already suffered the result of rising onion prices. Now the time has come for Congress to go through the same."
The BJP could be right in spotting an opening for consumers appear concerned about the rising prices.
Says a consumer, "The prices have reached till up to Rs 30 and its difficult for the common man to afford onions at this price."
The Congress is aware of the danger and that is one reason why Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Haroon Yusuf was spotted at an onion stall, promising a check on rising prices.
In the offing are 30 stalls across the Capital selling onions at Rs 22 per kg and mobile vans selling onions in minority-dominated areas in view of Ramzan. Haroon Yusuf also plans to act against retailers who are hoarding onions.
Says Yusuf, "The Central Government has banned the export of onions, which will definitely result in the people who have hoarded it for export purposes, to release their stock in the market."
It is the humble onion that reduced the BJP government to tears in 1999. With talk of early elections, the Congress in Delhi is certainly not taking any chances.
