Online entertainment, the new buzz

Mumbai: Online entertainment is the next big thing for studios and broadcasters.

For entertainment fans who are serious about their daily news fix, tabloids and TV programmes are just a part of the show.

The real action is online. A cautious estimate pegs the industry at upto Rs 800 crore excluding music and mobile revenue.

As traditional studios like Rajshri get online to launch and distribute their films, upto 80 per cent of their revenue comes from overseas, but that could change in the next six months, with Rajshri media group launching webisodes and mobile portal.

MD, Rajshri Media Rajjat Barjatya said, “In six months as we see more advertisers realising the potential of video advertising we will have more revenue from India. They need the measurability and the targeted reach that online provides as a medium and we offer them 6,000 hours of content.”

Broadcasters are getting into the act as well. Indya.com features the latest shows in webisode formats and Network 18 has launched Buzz 18.

Interviews, contests and exclusive film tie ups aside, the site features films by independent filmmakers, music uploaded by amateur and professional musicians and options to plan your weekend and book tickets online. While the investment may pinch bottom lines for now, WEB-18 hopes to change that soon.

Web-18 CEO Surya Mantha said, “Currently we are in the investment phase but by a year or so, with display advertising picking up.”

With just 10 million Indians online with a broadband connection, it may be an emerging trend, but with major groups investing crores in the business, it's here to stay.
