Mumbai: The number of people using the Internet for their banking needs has gone up 10 times in five years. And so have the number of online bank account frauds.

Six billion dollars are stolen from consumer accounts globally by attacks called phishing. And e-mails are the latest weapons with which the fraudsters attack your bank account

In October, last year Sukhwinder Singh lost Rs 41, 000 after he gave his password and login ID to what seemed like an e-mail from his bank.

Investigation revealed that his money had been transferred to one Harpreet Chohan in Delhi.

"I don't know how the money came into my account. I can't even use a computer. How can I hack someone's account?” says the alleged phisher, Chohan.

In an incident last month, UTI bank was the victim of a phishing attack.

The Delhi police arrested four Nigerian nationals and an Indian for allegedly duping 30 customers of 20 lakh rupees.

"They had copied the UTI logo etc on that basis they prepared letters posing as if they had originated from UTI,” says additional CP, Delhi police, K K Vyas.

The year 2005 saw 86 incidents of phishing reports while the incidents doubled to 200 in 2006, according to data from computer emergency response team, a Government of India organisation

However, banks across the country have put up alerts against phishing e-mails on their websites and many have launched campaigns to alert investors against it.
