Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused the CPI(M) of launching a false campaign against her government over the issue of farmers' death.
"Whenever anyone is committing suicide, he is being claimed to be a farmer. If anyone commits suicide, can it be called a farmer's suicide. As per the reports I have during the tenure of the present government only one farmer had died, the rest (who have died) are not farmers", Banerjee told a programme to mark Netaji's birthday on Monday.
Banerjee's comment came on a day, Governor MK Narayanan said on the sidelines of a function here that "Farmers' suicide is an issue engaging the attention of both the Centre and the state government. Such incidents are unfortunately taking place. We have to find a way to ensure that this does not happen."
