New Delhi: In a shocking case of medical inefficiency and ignorance, at least 12 villagers in UP's Barabanki district lost their eyesight after “doctors” from an NGO botched up their eye surgeries.
The incident occurred during a medical camp held by the NGO Maa Vaishnovi Charitable Chikitsa Sansthan.
The doctors of the NGO operated upon 88 cataract patients within two hours, taking just one-and-a-half minute for each surgery.
These surgeries weren’t conducted in an operation theatre but in the courtyard of the school where the camp was being held.
Even a post surgery follow up was not conducted. The eyes of four of the victims have been so severely damaged they will have to be surgically removed.
One of the victims even alleges that the doctors operated on the wrong eye. “They operated upon my eye instead of my eyelid. I was admitted for 5 days but now I will have to get my eye removed,” says a victim Mohammad.
The National Rural Health Mission has now called for an enquiry into the matter. The Chief Medical officer of Barabanki district, Uma Kant Gupta, says admits to negligence.
“Proper follow up was not done and the patients were not aware of personal hygiene and post-surgical care,” he said.
Barabanki District Magistrate Ravinder told CNN-IBN the NGO will be blacklisted.
"We are filing an FIR for negligence and taking action for blacklisting this NGO for future activities. We will also take legal action for compensation. Such camps are organised with the permission from the Chief Medical Officer. What they did in the school was wrong. They claimed that they did 88 operations but only 52 were conducted and 36 were wrongly claimed. I went to the village and have spoken to the villagers," the District Magistrate said.

I agree. The NGO needs to be prosecuted. Mere blacklisting is not enough.
