Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has promised strict action against those responsible for the rape of a nun during the anti-Christian violence in Kandhamal.
A day after the nun came out in public recounting her ordeal and blaming Orissa Police of not acting against the perpetrators, Patnaik on Saturday promised strict action and also appealed to the nun to come forward to attend an identification parade.
He also said the victim can choose a venue to carry out the identification parade anywhere in the country.
"I understand the trauma she must be going through for this savage crime, but we assure justice for her. And for that she has to cooperate with the Crime Branch and we are ready to do the parade of the accused anywhere in the country where she tells us," Patnaik said.
Official sources said the state government would "wait" for the nun to come forward assuring she could get instant justice if she cooperated with the investigation without further delay.
Home Secretary TK Mishra said the victim could get justice soon as the Crime Branch of Orissa Police had already made a "good progress" in the case.
"Now she has to come and identify the accused who have been arrested by police", he said, adding as many as nine persons had been put behind bars after their involvement in the mob attack on the nun was confirmed.
However, the police would confirm the "rapist" only after identification by the nun, who was allegedly raped on August 25.
Reiterating the state government's appeal to the nun, Mishra said that the case would be referred to the fast track court for quick justice.
Though three days had already passed since the apex court suggested the nun to assist probe, there was no sign of her cooperating with the investigation.
"Provisions under CrPC and IPC could be applied in the nun case," Mishra said while replying to a question on the victim's attitude of staying away from the investigation.
Senior officials noted that the nun preferred to go public at a press meet to reiterate her demand for a CBI probe into the incident even after what they said appreciation by the Supreme Court for the job done by Orissa Police.
