Bhubaneshwar: Naveen Patnaik won the trust vote, but not before there were unruly scenes inside the Orissa assembly. Amidst pandemonium, the speaker suddenly called for a voice vote and Naveen was declared the winner.
"The opposition was alleging that we are violating the election code of conduct by debating on our achievements in the house. So there was no other option but to go for the voice vote," says Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik.
Shocked by the BJD's decision to snap the 11 year old alliance with the BJP in the state, the saffron party accused Naveen of betrayal and also demanded that three of its MLAs who had crossed over to the BJD should be disqualified.
"He asked me about the proceedings. I explained him the details. He didn’t ask me anything more than that," says speaker, Orissa legislative assembly, Kishore Mohanty.
"The BJD is so desperate to remain in power for another two months and misuse the state machinery for elections that they are ready to kill democratic process of debate in the house."
The Congress may be seeing a hope of coming back to power in the state. Yet accused the state government of using the trust vote to gain electoral points,” says BJP legislative party leader Biswabhusan Barichandan.
"This is the most undemocratic way of conducting a trust vote. Never before anywhere in the country has such thing happened. The BJD did not have the guts to face discussion," Dy Leader, congress legislative party, Narsingh Mishra.
There was never much of a doubt on Naveen Patnaik proving majority in the house. The idea of Naveen Patnaik seemed to avoid embarrassment from their former ally BJP in the floor of the house by initiating a debate. The Chief Minister was quite successful in doing that apart from saving his government.
